Because the car has changed little since, a 2020 to 2022 example gives you almost all of the newest one for a lot less money, and the earliest of those are now well down their curve.

The Corolla is the easier car to own — cheapest parts, every workshop knows it, no surprises. The Hyundai Elantra hands you more equipment for the same money and a longer factory warranty on later cars. The Mazda gives up a little on both and wins on the way it drives and on interior quality. That is the whole trade: if you will never notice the difference from the driver's seat, buy the Corolla.

The engine and gearbox are not what to worry about — bodywork is. 67% of the Mazda 3s we inspect in Saudi Arabia show evidence of prior body or panel repair, against the 50% we would expect for sedans of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom. Every commuter sedan here reads high: the Hyundai Accent sits at 64% and the Toyota Corolla at 60%. Panel work is a normal part of a Saudi commuting history; what matters is whether it was done properly, which the inspection report on each car tells you.

  • Body and paint work — expected on this car, so inspect the quality: colour match in sunlight, consistent gaps.
  • Front suspension and bushes after Kingdom highway mileage.
  • AC performance at idle and the state of the cabin filter.
  • Service records spread across the car's life rather than bunched at the end.
