Frequently asked questions

The mechanical side is sound and the electronics are what to inspect. Among the Subarus we have inspected in the Kingdom, at a median of 106,000 km, 21% carried an electrical or electronics fault, against 9% for cars of the same age and mileage in this market. That is largely sensors, modules and switchgear rather than anything that stops the car, and it is inexpensive work once it has been found — so read the electrical section of the report and settle the price with it in hand. Older boxer engines also reward a check on oil consumption and head gaskets.

A Honda or Hyundai at the same price has more workshops behind it and will resell faster in the Kingdom. Subaru gives standard all-wheel drive and better composure on a rough surface. A Nissan is the pragmatic middle option, with the broadest parts network of the three.

The BRZ is the one to chase if you want the driver's car — a lightweight rear-drive coupe rather than the usual all-wheel-drive formula. The WRX keeps the all-wheel drive and adds turbo pace on top of it, at a step up in running cost.

  • Every electrical function, from a cold start through to a warm restart.
  • Oil consumption and any evidence of head-gasket work.
  • Drivetrain on full lock, and tyres matched on all four corners.
  • Where it has been serviced, and whether parts were genuine.

Any Subaru we list comes with its CarSwitch inspection report attached. Read the electrical and engine pages first — they are the two that decide whether the car is a bargain or a project.
