Frequently asked questions

2017 to 2021 is the sweet spot within the first generation. The 86 launched for 2012 with the 2.0-litre flat-four, and Toyota facelifted it for 2017 with revised suspension and a stiffer body. The second-generation GR86 arrived for 2022 with a 2.4-litre engine that fixes the old car's mid-range flat spot, and is the one to have if the budget reaches.

The BMW 230i is the grown-up alternative: turbocharged, quicker and better equipped, for more money and with more to go wrong. The Dodge Challenger gives you V8 pace and presence, but steers nothing like the 86. A Mercedes E250 is the comfortable option at similar money, though you inherit big-wheel running costs — tyre problems show on 15% of the ones we inspect in Saudi Arabia, against the 4% we would expect for cars of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom.

Longer than its reputation suggests, if it has been serviced properly. The 86s we inspect in Saudi Arabia come in at a median of around 176,000 km and are still changing hands. The engine is durable but hard-driven, so oil level and service intervals matter, and a clutch and tyres are consumables to price in.

  • Which gearbox, and how the clutch feels — the biggest single cost on a used 86.
  • Evidence of track use: cooked discs, cage or harness mounting holes, aftermarket tunes.
  • Suspension and tyres — matched pairs, and no worn-out cheap coilovers.
  • Oil level and service intervals in the record.

Every used Toyota 86 we list in the Kingdom comes with its full CarSwitch inspection report. Read the mechanical and suspension sections first — how it was driven matters more than how far.
