Two different buyers, one badge — and the off-road half of the range has widened since, with larger Beijing-badged ladder-frame SUVs now sitting above the BJ40.
How much does a used BAIC cost in Saudi Arabia?
Small money by SUV standards, which is the entire proposition. Our live Saudi listings are priced from SAR 29500 for an older small crossover up to SAR 70000 for a recent off-roader, across 11 cars. Nothing in the range asks premium-SUV money, so the decision is body style rather than budget.
Are used BAICs reliable?
Their accident history is the pleasant surprise. Across the BAICs we have inspected in Saudi Arabia, 19% showed evidence of previous body or panel repair, against the 32% we would expect for cars of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom — young cars that have mostly done city work, and it shows in the panels. So read the mechanical section rather than the bodywork, and treat a BJ40 that has obviously been off-road as a car to inspect underneath rather than avoid.
Do BAICs hold their value?
Respectably for a value brand: the make averages about 54% of its value after five years in the Kingdom, taken across its model curves. Cheap to buy and predictable to sell on is a fair combination at this money.
Which used BAIC should you buy?
The X7 is the family answer, largest and best equipped for the money, and the one to take if the car does school runs and highway trips. The BJ40 costs similar money but is a different machine — low range, solid rear axle, built for dunes rather than the school run. The X35 is the cheapest way in and the easiest to park.
BAIC or BYD?
Chery has the wider crossover line-up and a longer track record in the Kingdom, and BYD is where you go for electric and plug-in. BAIC's unique argument is the BJ40, which neither of them matches as an off-roader.
What to check on a used BAIC
- Underbody, diffs and steering on any BJ40, the model most likely to have worked.
- Warranty remaining and whether the agent will honour it for a second owner.
- Screens, cameras and driver aids, the equipment that justified the price when new.
- AC performance at idle, tested for several minutes rather than seconds.
