Frequently asked questions

The W177, from roughly 2019 onward, is the better buy — it rides better, carries Mercedes' newer MBUX system, and feels less highly strung than the older car on rough roads. An earlier W176 is cheaper but was tuned firmer, which shows up in the checks below.

The Mercedes A220 is the milder, cheaper version of the same car. A Suzuki Baleno costs a fraction of the price, though it will not match the A250 for cabin quality or pace. A Kia Rio is cheaper still but shows more prior body or panel repair — 75% against the 56% we would expect for economy hatchbacks of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom.

Buy on the individual car, not the badge. Our inspections find mismatched or damaged tyres on 30% of A250s against the 6% we would expect for hot hatches of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom, interior staining on 40% against the 18% we would expect for the same class, and an electrical or electronics fault on 30% against the 12% we would expect. None of this means the cars are unsound — a performance hatch gets driven harder and its cabin gets used more — but it is exactly why the CarSwitch inspection report matters before you commit to one.

  • Tyre matching and wear across all four corners.
  • Seats and headliner for staining or odour, especially on higher-mileage cars.
  • Dashboard warning lights and MBUX function on a full cold start.
  • Dual-clutch behaviour from a standstill.
  • Full service history at a Mercedes-approved workshop.

Read the inspection report on the specific A250 you are considering — on this car it tells you far more than the model year does.
