Listings run from SAR 21000 to SAR 28500 — the bottom of the mid-size SUV market here, and well under what an equivalent Japanese car asks.

Read this before you shop. A fault in the engine, gearbox, suspension or steering shows on 53% of the Jeep Cherokees we inspect in the Kingdom, against the 27% we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage here. Most of it is the nine-speed automatic and the suspension on high-mileage cars, and it runs in the family — the Jeep Compass shows 36% against the 19% expected for its class. Tyres add to the bill, mismatched or damaged on 15% against the 6% expected for the same class. None of this makes the Cherokee unbuyable; it makes buying one without a mechanical report a gamble.

The Kia Sportage costs far more but retains 61% after five years and shows body repair on 47% against the 51% expected for Saudi SUVs of similar age and mileage. The Toyota Fortuner is stronger again at 65%. The Cherokee wins on purchase price and ride comfort, and on little else.

2019 or later. This Cherokee launched in 2014 with the split-headlight nose and was facelifted for 2019 into a conventional face with a much improved cabin; the generation ended in 2023. The facelift also brought better transmission calibration, which on this car matters more than the styling.

Roughly in line with the class — about 48% of its value after five years, against roughly 47% for SUVs of the same age and mileage. The low purchase price does most of the work here.
