Post-redesign, if the budget reaches. GAC replaced the original GS5 towards the end of the 2010s with a substantially newer car — new platform, new interior, new electrical architecture — and that split matters far more than any model year either side of it.

It sits level with the class rather than behind it — about 50% of its value after five years, against roughly 51% for SUVs of the same age and mileage. Worth knowing before you assume a value SUV must be the expensive one to own.

The cabin is what lets these down: 22% of the GS5s we inspect in Saudi Arabia show interior staining, against the 10% we would expect for cars of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom. Cosmetic rather than mechanical, but it is the clearest signal of how a car was used, and cheap leverage on price. The class is not immune — the Hyundai Creta stains on 14% of cars against 8% expected for its own band, while the Haval Jolion comes through clean at 0% against 4%.

The Hyundai Tucson is the better car and the safer buy, with mechanical faults on 14% against 18% expected for its band. The Chevrolet Captiva is the closest value rival and the weaker of the two mechanically, 24% against 10% expected for its band. The GS5's pitch is interior room for the least money.
