2019 to 2021 is the sweet spot. The A8 changed generations around 2018 — new platform, twin-touchscreen cabin, a big step in driver assistance — so a 2018-or-later car is a different machine from the 2010-to-2017 one, however similar the silhouette looks. The older car tempts on price alone, but its electronics are past a decade old.

All three are flagship money spent second-hand. The BMW 740 costs about the same and inspects better mechanically, at 11% against the 20% expected for sedans of its age and mileage here. The Mercedes E350 carries the least accident history of the three, at 24% for body or panel repair against an expected 45%. The A8's case is space and isolation for the money.

Buy this one on the report rather than the test drive. 38% of the Audi A8s we inspect in Saudi Arabia show a fault in the engine, gearbox, suspension or steering against the 24% we would expect for sedans of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom, 29% carry an electrical fault against an expected 11%, and prior body or panel repair shows on 70% against an expected 56%. These come in at a median of about 149,000 km — what a heavily equipped flagship looks like by its third owner. If repairs are not in your budget, the simpler BMW 730 sits at 5% for electrical faults against its own 10% expectation.
