Volkswagen moved the Jetta onto its MQB platform for the 2019 model year, bringing a stiffer body, sharper steering and a smoother-shifting DSG than the car it replaced. 2019 to 2021 is the sweet spot: modern enough to have the current platform, without paying showroom money for it.

The Toyota Corolla is the obvious safe choice, yet our inspections still find prior body or panel repair on 60% of the cars we check, against the 48% we would expect for compact sedans of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom. The Hyundai Elantra runs close behind at 59% against the same 49% benchmark for the class. Neither figure rules a car out, it is a reason to read the report on the specific one in front of you — and it is what the Jetta's more planted highway feel is buying you over both.

Long, on the evidence of the cars we inspect: the Jetta here comes in at a median of around 200,000 km and keeps running past that. The DSG gearbox and the TSI engine are the two things a service record should speak for, rather than something to worry about on principle — a maintained example goes the distance, a neglected one does not.
