Yes, you can sell a financed car in Dammam, just not directly. Most car finance contracts in the Kingdom are lease-to-own (Ijarah ending in ownership), so the car is registered to the finance company as the owner, and you’re the actual user. That leaves you two routes. You can pay off the remaining balance early, transfer ownership to your name, and then sell. Or, if the finance company agrees, the buyer can take over the contract. In most cases the first route is the clearest.
Key Points
- A financed car is registered to the finance company until it’s fully paid off, so it can’t be sold on Absher before then.
- You have the right to settle early at any time, and Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) regulations prohibit charging you the financing cost for the full remaining term of the contract.
- After you settle, the finance company issues a clearance letter and transfers ownership to your name. This usually takes a few days.
- The alternative is for the buyer to take over the contract, which needs the finance company’s approval after reviewing their file.
- The ownership transfer fee is SAR 150 per transfer, so factor it in if there are two transfers.
Why Can’t You Sell It Directly?
In lease-to-own financing, the finance company buys the car and leases it to you. Legal ownership stays in its name in the traffic system until you pay the last installment. That’s why you appear on the registration (Istimara) as the actual user, and you can’t sell the car on Absher as its owner. The car first needs to be in your name.
Route One: Settle Early, Then Sell
- Request the early settlement amount. Contact the finance company and ask for a statement showing the amount needed to close the contract today and how long that figure is valid.
- Compare the amount with the expected sale price. If the market price is higher than what you owe, the difference is yours. If it’s lower, you’ll need to cover the gap from your own money.
- Pay and get the clearance letter. After you pay, the finance company issues a clearance letter and starts transferring ownership to you.
- Check on Absher. Wait until the car shows in your name as owner before you set a date for the sale.
- Sell through the Vehicle Sale service. From here it’s a normal sale. The steps are in our guide to selling your car in Dammam.
How Much Does Early Settlement Cost?
Under the Implementing Regulation of the Finance Companies Control Law issued by the Saudi Central Bank, the borrower has the right to pay off the remaining balance early at any time, and the finance company may not charge the financing cost for the remaining term of the contract. What it can charge is limited to the reinvestment cost for a set period after settlement, calculated on the declining balance, plus any non-refundable third-party costs that were paid and are stated in the contract. The exact amount appears on the early settlement statement from the finance company, so ask for it in writing.
Route Two: Transfer the Contract to the Buyer
Some finance companies allow a new buyer to take over the contract and the remaining installments. The buyer has to apply and pass the finance company’s credit review. Both parties then sign the amended contract, and the finance company changes the actual user’s name in the traffic system. This route is useful if the buyer wants to keep paying in installments, but it’s slower and depends entirely on the finance company’s approval. A Tip Before You Decide
Before you settle, find out your car’s real market value. Compare it with similar used car listings in Dammam, and remember that an accident on record or average condition lowers the price. If you owe more on the finance than the car is worth on the market, it may be better to delay the sale or look for a buyer who’ll take over the contract.
“The first question we ask a seller whose car is financed is: how much is left, and what’s the car worth on the market? If you know both numbers before you agree with a buyer, you avoid any surprises on sale day.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell my car while it still has finance on it?
Yes, but only after you settle early and ownership moves to your name, or if the buyer takes over the contract with the finance company’s approval. You can’t sell it directly because it’s registered to the finance company.
How much is the early settlement fee for car finance?
Under Saudi Central Bank regulations, you can’t be charged the financing cost for the full remaining term. What can be charged is limited to the reinvestment cost for a set period and third-party costs stated in the contract. Ask the finance company for an early settlement statement.
How long does the ownership transfer take after settlement?
Usually a few days after the clearance letter is issued. Check on Absher that the car is in your name before you set a date for the sale.
Can the buyer take over the installments instead of me?
Some finance companies allow this after reviewing the buyer’s credit file and approving it. The contract is then amended and the actual user’s name is transferred.
