The Fortuner is tougher on rough roads, at a higher price and with a far less pleasant ride. The Hyundai Santa Fe matches the CX-9 on size and price, though 33% show a mechanical fault against the 26% expected for its age and mileage group — the Mazda is the cleaner buy.

2021 to 2023 for the best of it. The second-generation car arrived for 2016, replacing the V6 with the 2.5-litre turbo, and was substantially updated for 2021 — new interior, retuned suspension — before the larger CX-90 replaced it. On a tighter budget, a 2018 to 2020 car is the same package for less.

It gives up more than its rivals — about 51% of its value after five years, against roughly 56% for Saudi SUVs and 62% across used Mazdas. The Toyota Fortuner keeps about 65%.
