Frequently asked questions

2019 to 2021 is the window worth targeting. The generation on sale here launched in 2012 and was substantially updated in 2016 with a new nose, a better interior and more safety equipment, so buy on the right side of 2016.

Below the class, and that is the price of the low entry cost: about 40% of its value after five years, against roughly 46% for comparable saloons of the same age. The Sonata returns about 56% for more money up front.

Judge it on paint and panels rather than mechanicals: 73% of the Volkswagen Passats we inspect in Saudi Arabia carry evidence of prior body or panel repair, against the 57% we would expect for saloons of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom. That is what large family saloons look like here — the Hyundai Sonata runs at 68% against the 55% expected for its own age and mileage — and with a median 158,000 km behind these cars it is a working history rather than a defect.

The Toyota Camry costs a great deal more and earns it: a mechanical fault shows on 13% of Camrys against the 18% expected for saloons of that age and mileage, and it sells on far faster. The Volkswagen CC is the cheaper coupe-shaped sibling, but its mechanical fault rate is more than double what its age and mileage would suggest.
