Frequently asked questions

Subaru moved to a new-generation WRX for the 2022 model year with a larger 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer replacing the older 2.0-litre unit, so a 2022-onward car gets more power and a cleaner interior design. An earlier car from the previous generation is the cheaper way into standard all-wheel drive and a manual gearbox, with the older boxer's head-gasket history worth a check rather than a reason to avoid it outright.

The Mercedes E400 costs more for a different kind of performance sedan, smoother rather than rally-bred. The Toyota Corolla is far cheaper if all-wheel-drive performance isn't the priority and low running costs are.

Well past 100,000 km on cars that have been maintained properly. The WRXs we inspect here run to a median of around 106,000 km, and the turbocharged boxer holds up to that distance provided oil changes have kept pace with how the car is driven.

Turbocharged boxer engine for head-gasket seepage and oil consumption.
Manual clutch or CVT behaviour depending on transmission fitted.
All-wheel-drive system for even tyre wear front to rear.
Modification history and whether tuning was matched with proper maintenance.

See the Subaru WRXs currently listed on CarSwitch to compare generation and spec.
