The bodywork is the good news. Only 34% of the Mercedes E300s we inspect in Saudi Arabia carry evidence of prior body or panel repair, against the 48% we would expect for saloons of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom — a clean record for a car that covers long highway miles. Repair history is normal in this class rather than a fault; what matters is the standard of the work, which the report on the individual car shows.

2019 to 2021 is the sweet spot. The W213 E-Class arrived for the 2017 model year and was facelifted for 2021 with the wide twin screens; the previous W212, built to 2016, is the cheap end and the one where air suspension and electronics turn a bargain into a bill. Buy on the W213 side of that line, and take the 2.0-litre turbo over an older V6.

It gives up a little more than the class average, which works for the buyer: a Saudi Mercedes E300 keeps about 42% of its value after five years against roughly 46% for comparable saloons of the same age and mileage. The three-to-five-year-old car is the buy.
