Any of the current-shape cars are the same generation under the skin, so mileage and service history matter more than the exact registration year. A car from the earlier end of this run costs less but has had more time to rack up kilometres on a car that gets driven with intent.

The Mercedes CLA200 is the cheaper, less aggressive relative in the range. A Lexus ES250 costs similar money and our inspections find fewer mechanical faults on it — 4% against the 15% we would expect for saloons of this age and mileage in the Kingdom — though it gives up the AMG's pace and all-wheel drive. A BMW 730 is cheaper still and shows fewer electrical faults, at 5% against the 10% we would expect for the same class, but is a much larger car aimed at a different buyer.

The A35 AMGs we inspect in the Kingdom run a median of around 42,000 km, which is low for the age of the car and suggests most are still on their first major service intervals.

  • Brake wear and rotor condition — AMG brakes are consumables on a driven car.
  • All-wheel-drive system for unusual noise under hard acceleration.
  • Turbo response and any hesitation on cold start.
  • Wheels and tyres for kerb damage from spirited driving.
  • Full AMG-specific service history, not just standard A-Class servicing.
