The Tahoe is the brand's centre of gravity, with the Suburban above it and the Silverado alongside, bought for space, highway comfort and a V8 that copes with distance. Ford is the direct rival on the full-size SUVs and pickups, and Nissan is cheaper to run over a decade. Chevrolet's strength is parts and workshop coverage in every city, which matters most on a high-mileage car.

Buy the individual car's history, because these have covered serious distance. Across more than 3,000 Chevrolets we have inspected in the Kingdom, 28% carried a fault in the engine, gearbox, suspension or steering against the 22% we would expect for cars of the same age and mileage here, and 13% an electrical fault against the 10% expected for comparable cars. On SUVs that have crossed the country repeatedly, those are the numbers to expect. Read the mechanical pages of the report and price the suspension and gearbox items in — everything on these cars is cheap and quick to repair here.

The Tahoe is where to start, the widest choice here and the best size-to-cost compromise. The Suburban is the same car stretched, worth it only if you need the length. The Traverse gives seven seats without the fuel bill, and the Malibu is the cheap saloon option.
