Buy on condition over calendar year here — the XJL's local supply does not split cleanly into a clear generation to favor, so the individual car's maintenance record should decide it, not the plate.

Jaguar's own XF costs less and shows a lower mechanical fault rate, though its own interior staining runs high, so neither Jaguar sedan is a clean sweep. Among outside rivals, the Lexus ES250 costs less and carries a stronger reliability record if that outweighs the extra space the XJL offers.

This is the one to inspect carefully rather than walk away from. Our checks find a mechanical fault, in the engine, gearbox, suspension or steering, on 45% of XJLs against the 21% we would expect for flagship sedans of similar age and mileage in the Kingdom, and evidence of prior body or panel repair on 75% against the 56% expected for the same class. The BMW 740 shows a lower 11% mechanical fault rate for comparison, which is the gap a full service history needs to close before you buy.
