2019 onward. The H9 arrived in the middle of the last decade with a two-litre turbocharged petrol engine, a proper low-range transfer case and locking differentials. The significant update landed towards the end of the decade: an eight-speed automatic in place of the six, a reworked interior and better sound insulation. That gearbox change is the single biggest difference in how the car drives, and it is worth the price gap.

A little under its class, at about 46% of its value after five years against roughly 51% for SUVs of comparable vintage.

Accident history is not the problem people expect. 30% of the Haval H9s we inspect in Saudi Arabia show previous paint or panel repair, against the 50% we would expect for SUVs of the same age and mileage in the Kingdom — these are used off-road far less than the specification suggests. What to check instead is whether the four-wheel-drive system has ever actually been exercised, because unused transfer cases and diff locks seize as readily as worn ones fail.

The Toyota Fortuner is the concession to make: it costs similar money, holds about 65% after five years, inspects cleaner on bodywork at 38% against the 47% expected for Kingdom SUVs of its age, and sells itself when you are done. Buy the H9 for the equipment level and the low-range hardware at the price. The Haval Dargo is the cheaper, road-biased alternative from the same maker.
